The opening film was \u2018Exhuma\u2019, a South Korean box office hit that premiered at the 74th Berlin International Film Festival. The festival\u2019s Faces section spotlighted the work of production designer Hwa-sung Cho, who also attended the event in person. In addition to the latest blockbusters, award-winning independent and short films that rarely reach Hungary were also screened. The guest of honour this year was director E J-yong, whose latest contemplative erotic drama, \u2018A Murderous Woman\u2019, strikes an unusually harsh note of social criticism.<\/p>\n<p>The festival began with the film adaptation of Haruki Murakami&#8217;s mystical short story by director Lee Chang-dong, \u2018\u2018The Lighters\u2019 at Urania cinema, and was expanded withfour permanent sections and a re-branded image.<\/p>\n<p>The Fresh section featured the latest Korean blockbusters and focused primarily on Korean cinematic trends. The section,also shown in rural cinemas participating in the festival, presented the latest and most popular Korean films in a wide range of genres \u2013 from Lee Yong-seung&#8217;s comedy \u2018Room 7\u2019 to Min Kyu-dong&#8217;s drama \u2018Women&#8217;s Fates\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>The Faces selection presented one of Korea&#8217;s most influential filmmakers, E J-yong, whose four cult films Hungarian audiences were already somewhat familiar with.<\/p>\n<p>The Focus section focuses on a special theme each year. In2018, it showcased short films from the Korea Academy of Film Arts (KAFA). Entries selected by Hungarian film professionals were included in the Extra section.The chosen scholar of the year was Ter\u00e9z Vincze, assistant professor of the Department of Film Studies at ELTE. After the ceremonial opening at the Ur\u00e1nia National Film Theater ofBudapest, the entire festival selection could be viewed at the Sug\u00e1r Cinema, the selection of films focusing on special female characters, including Kim Kiduk&#8217;s \u2018Piet\u00e1\u2019, was hosted by Premier Kultcaf\u00e9. These masterpieces of Korean film occupied the Apoll\u00f3 Cinema in Debrecen, the House of Civil Communities in P\u00e9cs, and the Belv\u00e1rosi Cinema in Szeged for two days each.<\/p>\n<p>The festival\u2019s slogan was \u201cDaebak!\u201d i.e. &#8220;heck!&#8221;, &#8220;yes!&#8221; &#8220;fantastic!&#8221;. 26 films were introduced, along with several accompanying programs. The opening film of the festival, which the audience could see at the Urania National Film Theater, was \u2018The Taxi Driver\u2019, an Oscar nominated South Korean film. . At Sug\u00e1r Cinema, screenings began with the highly successful film \u2018Suspicion\u2019. The selection also included films such as \u2018Cadet Detectives\u2019, \u2018The Admiral\u2019, \u2018Busan Express\u2019 and \u2018The Assassin\u2019. In addition, the program included family films, romantic comedies, large-scale historical dramas and modern social epics. This time, between November 10 and 14, there were screenings at 6 locations, including 3 rural towns.<\/p>\n<p>The films shown at the festival had been selected throughout the course of a year-long qualification process. Part of this process was an audience research form, a questionnaire completed by almost 2000 Hungarian movie-goers, ensuring that the programme would reflect the local audiences&#8217; tastes. The selection included historical adventure-, action-, drama-, thriller-, romance-, comedy-, crime- and animation films.<\/p>\n<p>A total of 20 original language films were shown at the festival with Hungarian subtitles. The audience could see 10 of these at Ur\u00e1nia National Film Theater.<\/p>\n<p>At the official opening of the festival, on November 10, at the Ur\u00e1nia Film Theater, visitors were greeted by a special Korean dance performance and concert. Some of the works will represent more than one of these categories.<\/p>\n<p>After that, with a one-year gap in 2009, the 2nd Korean Film Festival was held,opened by Lee Chang-dong&#8217;s work \u2018Hidden Sun\u2019, a prize-winner at Cannes Film Festival.<\/p>\n<p>The focus of the 2010 (3rd), 2011 (4th) and 2013 (5th) festivals were box office films such as \u2018National Selection\u2019, \u2018Pletykalavina\u2019 or \u2018Egy m\u00e1zs\u00e1s bomb\u00e1z\u00f3\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>In 2014, at the 7th Korean Film Festival, the members of the Korean Film Club, founded in 2012, played a big role in the upcoming events, the 2015 (8th) and 2016 (9th) film festivals. Events with character.<\/p>\n<p>As a result, the number of participants not only increased exponentially, but the festival was also able to extend outside the capital, Budapest: from this year on, it was also held in Szeged, P\u00e9cs and Debrecen.
